CVSI (Commercial Vehicle Safety Inspection unit)

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Inspection unit (CVSI) is located at police headquarters at 911 N. Raynor, and is assigned 1 lieutenant and 1 sergeant with 4 uniformed officers.

Every day thousands of large trucks carrying cargo of all types pass through the El Paso corridor. Some of the vehicles stay on the I-10 and U.S. 54, but many also drive on the city streets to get to their drop off/pick up destinations. Both the I-10 and U.S. 54 are major commerce corridors used by thousands of commercial vehicles each day, this also includes vehicles coming and going from Mexico. The size of these vehicles, as well as their type of cargo, make the regulation of these large commercial vehicles crucial to the traffic safety in El Paso.

The four uniformed officers assigned to CVSI address the regulation of the commercial vehicles. The officers receive special training in the federal and state laws regulating commercial vehicles. The officers carry specialized equipment, which allows them to inspect the commercial vehicles for safety violations as well as weight and proper operation. Vehicles that are found to be improperly operated or with safety violations are parked or cited until the situation is rectified.
