On February 13th, 1915, Officer Gus Chitwood
was sent with other officers to the alley west of Florence Street, between
3rd and 4th streets regarding a subject firing a gun. While searching the
alley, the suspect emerged from a doorway and shot Officer Chitwood in the
chest. He died within a few minutes of being shot. After being fired upon
by other officers, the suspect escaped, only to be captured within an hour.
The newspaper reports the suspect confessed to the crime during the interrogation.
While in custody, the suspected attempted to grab another officer’s gun.
The suspect was shot to death in the office of the Chief of Detectives.
Officer Chitwood was the fourth El Paso Officer to die in the line of duty.
