nce
upon a time in a Lower Valley
far, far away, the children of
the valley painstakingly created
images from their favorite fairy
tales and placed them on stone
tiles. The tiles were placed on
a wall in the castle…..ooops, we
mean the old Lower Valley
Library on San Jose Road, for
everyone to enjoy. The children
married and had children. And
their children married and had
children......and more children. And all of the
families would visit the Lower
Valley Library to enjoy the
stone tiles. |
Then one day the dragon of
progress breathed its flames of
change on the old building which
forced the library to move to a
new,,,,,albeit… much better
location. But the tiles......what
became of the tiles???
Unknown to the children of the
valley, an evil wizard took the
tiles and locked them
away in a dungeon where no child
would ever see them. But a
magic fairy heard about this
terrible deed and started
working on a magic potion that
would release the tiles from the
dungeon.
After many years of hard
work and research, the
fairy found the magic
potion and was able to
free the tiles from
their dark and dingy
captivity. |
 |
The tiles were happy to
finally be free and
looked forward to moving
into their new home.
The tiles once again bring
smiles to the faces of the
children of the valley at the
new castle …umm...we mean the
Judge Marquez Library on
Yarbrough.
See them again or see
them for the first time. |

EL PASO -- A colorful milestone in the
history of the Judge Edward S. Marquez
Mission Valley Branch Library, 610 N.
Yarbrough, will soon be on display for
all library patrons and visitors to
enjoy.
In 1959, elementary students from 14
Lower Valley schools were asked to draw
scenes from their favorite stories.
Hundreds of pieces were selected, and
the children were asked to draw the same
image directly onto tiles.
The "Story Book Wall," as it was called
in the El Paso Herald Post (July 25,
1960), was the resulting assemblage of
336 tiles colorfully depicting
children's literature. It was displayed
at the library branch at 7915 San Jose.
Participating schools were Ascarate,
Cadwallader, Cedar Grove, Hacienda
Heights, Incarnate Word, Loma Terrace,
North Loop, Our Lady of the Valley,
Ramona, Ranchland Hills, South Loop,
Ysleta, Marion Manor and Scotsdale.
The project was coordinated by Gwen Page
under the leadership of Ysleta school
district Superintendent J.M. Hanks. It
was sponsored and financed by the
Downtown El Paso Rotary Club.
When the library was relocated, the
tiles were removed to be reassembled in
their new home. This wasn't easy: A
similar display of children's artwork in
Milton, Mass., from which the Ysleta
district had borrowed the idea, did not
survive the library's construction
changes.
As a result, El Paso has the distinction
of being the curator of the oldest
assembled display of children's story
tiles in the United States. Similar
displays in the El Paso area are in the
Clardy Fox Branch Library, 5515 Robert
Alva, and the Richard Burges Regional
Library, 9600 Dyer.
The faithful Friends of the Judge
Marquez library, along with the staff of
the El Paso Public Library System, were
adamant that the tiles take their
rightful place on the wall of the
children's section of the library. Steps
were taken to ensure that the tiles were
reassembled in a manner that will allow
them to always be a part of the library.
The colorful tiles are joyful,
expressive, vivid, sincere and
reflective of the stories that are so
much a part of a child's world. The wall
is a resplendent and, more important,
childlike reflection of El Paso's
learning history.
A reinstallation reception is scheduled
for 11:00 am June 19, 2010
If you are curious to view this wondrous
rainbow-colored art, or want to
reacquaint yourself with images of
classic favorites like "The Three Little
Pigs," "Robin Hood," or "Little Red
Riding Hood," come and see. |

Please note: Some
names were hard to read on the tiles or the tile was
damaged.
