"For over 40 years, José Galvez has used
black and white film to create a powerful
and unparalleled historical record of the
Latino experience in America. His compelling
work, done with respect, pride and no
pretense, captures the beauty of daily life.
For José, photographing the lives of Latinos
is not a one-time project or “current
passion” but a lifelong commitment.

|
As an artist, he photographs nothing else.
His personal history, love of family, and
cultural knowledge enable him to pursue his
work with a reverent understanding of the
stories behind the images."

About
Shine Boy |
Shine
Boy places the stories of Jose
Galvez's childhood next to his award-winning
photographs to create a powerful testament
of how one poor boy met and fulfilled his
destiny.
Photographer José Galvez grew up in the
Mexican American barrios of Tucson, Arizona.
He first found his freedom, and helped
support his family, while working on street
corners, shining shoes and selling
newspapers.
But one fateful day, Galvez carried his
shoeshine box up the stairs and into a
magical place: the busy, cluttered newsroom
of the local paper. His life would never be
the same.
The stories in this book are like the
photographs that accompany them: quiet,
spare, and poignant. They are the powerful
memories that drive Galvez's lifelong work
documenting Latino communities in the United
States. Together the photos and stories
create a work that spans time and speaks not
only to those who grew up Latino in America,
but to us all. |
