The Medical Division is known as the Fire Rescue Division and is part of Emergency Operations. The El Paso Fire Department and the Department of Emergency Medical Services were merged in the year 2000. Prior to the merger, Fire Department personnel operated as First Responders and were trained to the level of Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) -Basic or Emergency Care Attendant (prior to September 1985). Very few firefighters were trained as Paramedics and most of those took the training on their own time.
The city merged in order to provide the citizens of El Paso a better response system at less cost. The administrative functions were streamlined and the city now provides emergency medical services at the Paramedic level through the Fire Department. The City currently staffs 23 full time Mobile Intensive Care Unit (MICU) ambulances and 4 peak-time transport ambulances. Mission Statement El Paso Fire Department Medical Services Division’s Mission is: To provide emergency medical pre-hospital treatment and transportation to the community in order to reduce morbidity and mortality. Deliver patients to definitive care in a timely and fiscally responsible manner.
