Purpose
To provide residents with a working knowledge of City Government and the essential skill sets to become effective neighborhood advocates and community leaders.
Objectives
- Educate non-traditional community leaders
- Provide a comprehensive curriculum on City services
- Promote civic engagement and residents’ roles in decision making processes
- Increase resident’s pride in their community and understanding for their City
Program Guidelines
- 18 week course that meets on Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at City Hall or on-site location
- The Neighborhood Leadership Academy will enroll 55 participants
- More than four absences drops participant from program
- Participants will receive a certificate of completion for program
- Participants may also be recommended for City boards and commissions
- Optional Continuing Education Units (CEUs) through UTEP’s Professional and Educational Program
Selection Criteria
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Must be a resident living within the El Paso City limits
- Must be a Non-Traditional leader (meaning a person who is not currently serving on a City board, commission or an elected office)
- Must complete the Neighborhood Leadership Academy application form for enrollment
